• GREATER STILLWATER AREA GREEN BUSINESS DIRECTORY AND AWARDS LAUNCHED

  • STILLWATER MINNESOTA, 10 MAY 2021 — GreenStillwater.org, created by Sustainable Stillwater MN, a 501c3 nonprofit, is Washington County’s first green business directory that matches shoppers with businesses that share their values. A resource for consumers to make better informed decisions with their money, GreenStillwater.org is also a great way for businesses to be recognized for the work they do to be sustainable.

The Green Business Directory was conceived as a way to improve the quality of life for residents, encourage green tourism, bring about a green recovery, and attract a new generation of socially and environmentally conscious consumers to visit, shop, work, and live here.

To be considered for the directory, companies fill out an application online at GreenStillwater.org to disclose their practices about waste disposal, water usage, energy conservation, environmental impacts of products, social responsibility, and more.

More than a dozen companies have applied and fulfilled entry criteria. Team leader Wendy Gorski says many companies are greener than they think. They have been working on being sustainable because it saves them money on waste disposal and energy. They also provide quality goods and services. The Green Business Directory will help these sustainable businesses reach a wider audience.

Company achievement levels are tiered from entry-level to advanced so that many businesses will qualify at some level. The highest achievers receive an online profile, social media promotion, and first-place search results.

One of the most recent entrants into the Green Business Directory is the Water Street Inn in Stillwater, which received a score of 87 out of 80 qualifying points and qualified for a Gold Level award. The Water Street Inn has solar on the roof, does extensive recycling and waste reduction, provides a living wage to workers, supports community organizations, and is certified as sustainable by the Minnesota Bed and Breakfast Association.

Another is IPS-Solar. Although based in Roseville, this clean energy company serves businesses in Washington County with solar farm and rooftop solar installations and is involved in helping nonprofits like Sustainable Stillwater MN in local communities.

Other qualified green businesses include: Andersen Corporation, Lakeview Hospital, Artisan Environments (landscaping), Joseph’s Restaurant, River Market Community Co-op, VistaTek, FamilyMeans, First Presbyterian Church of Stillwater, Valley Outreach, Sarah Grace Photography, Big Frog Custom T-Shirts of Woodbury, and Chilkoot Cyclery.

The project is supported by grants and donations from Washington County BizRecycling, the Fred C. and Katherine B. Andersen Foundation, Lakeview Hospital, IPS-Solar, and the Stillwater Rotary Clubs.

Companies that apply can also take advantage of free grants and waste and energy audits from Washington County, EnergySmart, MNTAP, RETAP, CERTS, and other services listed on GreenStillwater.org's resource page. https://www.greenstillwater.org/resources
