120+ small local businesses have already been sued for ADA Non-Compliance
Learn how to protect your business!
Twin Cities Attorney Paul Hansmeier has been suing small businesses for ADA non-compliance and literally putting them out of business. His tactic is to simply drive by the business, and if sees non-compliance, he will sue for thousands of dollars. He lives in Woodbury and has been focusing on the East side of the Metro including many businesses in White Bear Lake, and Willernie. Stillwater area’s historic buildings make us a prime target for this kind of threat.
The current law does not allow businesses a grace period to fix any issues, and there are efforts by local Chambers and the MN Chamber to change the law. In the meantime, small businesses and property owners should educate themselves. The Greater Stillwater Chamber and local business attorney, Jean Anderson from Anderson Legal Services are offering a quick, free educational session so landlord and tenant businesses can protect themselves.
Educate and protect yourself by learning:
- Who is responsible – tenant business or landlord?
- What is required to comply with the ADA and ADAA Federal and State access laws?
- What can I do to protect myself from a possible lawsuit?
- What do I do if I get sued?
- What resources are available to help me become compliant?
