SUMMARY:Stillwater Library Gallery featuring Lena Wolf Rothman
DESCRIPTION:In May and June\, the Stillwater Public Library Gallery is hosting a show of paintings and drawings by Osceola artist Lena Wolf Rothman. Lena Rothman is a Midwest artist trained in classical\, Dutch and Flemish techniques. She studied at Atelier Lack\, the Florence Academy of Art\, and with Jeffrey Hurinenko and Joseph Paquet. For Rothman drawing and painting the human face and figure has always been a passion. She would often use family and friends for subjects. While studying at Atelier Lack\, Rothman composed and painted a full figure oil study of her parents with her Russian and Romanian grandparents. As her grandparents were deceased\, she used small sepia toned photos adding flesh tones and color. After a trip to Italy in 1995\, Rothman was so captivated with the color\, landscape and culture that she returned in the summer of 2002 to study at the Florence Academy of Art. Rothman then traveled to Iasi\, Romania\, to research her ancestry. Returning in 2004\, Rothman lived in Iasi and traveled thru Romania returning with a wealth of paintings\, experiences and friends. A result of her Romanian trip\, the painting\, Cristina\, was selected for the international exhibit\, Richeson 75: Figure\, Portrait 2008 Competition. Rothman has exhibited at International Market Square\, the Jewish Community Center\, the Romanian Church of St. Paul\, the Kelley Gallery\, and the St. Croix ArtBarn. Lena is a member of The Portrait Society of America and The Great Lakes Pastel Society. According to Rothman\, "Wherever color or light are present\, where humans interact\, where people engage in their work or daily pursuits\, either acting or being acted upon\; where landscapes reveal interesting line\, moods\, history and culture\, I see life. For in light we behold beauty\, joy and color. Herein lies Gods creation. My goal as an artist is to express this through the subjects I paint." A reception to honor the artist will be held on Thursday\, May 13\, from 5:30 to 7:30 P.M. in the gallery\, which is on the upper level of the library near the Margaret Rivers Meeting Room.
